Ed Glinert, David Taylor
R340 Discovery Miles 3 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There might be more books on Oxford than students who have attended the world’s greatest university, but there has never been one as dynamic and exciting as 111 Places in Oxford That You Shouldn’t Miss. Author Ed Glinert has sifted through all the college histories, records and lists of alumni; examined all the quads and cloisters of the great colleges; explored the glorious villages hewn from honey-dripping Cotswold stone; luxuriated in the glamorous coffee houses of High Street; imagined society’s earliest motor cars built at the Morris garages; been struck dumb by the never-ending peal of bells at Tom Tower; relaxed at Carfax, the very centre of the universe; and tippled at each of the legendary pubs between St Giles and Merton. This is a volume which will send residents into paroxysms of laughter, remind students why they’re there, and warn prospective undergrads of the joys of living in one of the world’s most beautiful and cleverest cities.

111 Places in Northumberland That You Shouldn't Miss (Paperback): David Taylor 111 Places in Northumberland That You Shouldn't Miss (Paperback)
David Taylor
R354 Discovery Miles 3 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Northumberland is the ‘Land of the Far Horizon’ and England’s most northerly county. It was once a place of industrial innovation and manufacturing, literally fuelled by the coal brought up from its depths. Now Northumberland is a quieter place, loved by residents and visitors alike for its rolling hills and long, sandy beaches, as well as its charming towns and villages. With this book in hand, meet Grace Darling, a Victorian heroine who took to storm-tossed seas to help rescue survivors of a terrible shipwreck; visit Amble, the ‘Friendliest Port’, and discover its connection to the Mauretania, once the fastest passenger ship to sail the Atlantic; and take in Turner’s View, an atmospheric stretch of coastline that was a lifelong inspiration to Britain’s greatest landscape painter. You can also take a walk to the top of Cheviot, the county’s highest mountain and what was once a massive and very active volcano; and then top it off in the tranquil setting of St Cuthbert’s Island, where the eponymous saint went to get away from the strangely hectic whirl of monastic life. Written by a proud northerner, this book will help you discover the more offbeat corners of Northumberland, and appreciate its many treasures.

R355 Discovery Miles 3 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Whether you are new to the area or a frequent visitor, this book will be the perfect companion for your exploration of Northumberland and Hadrian's Wall." - Worldwide Writer Hadrian's Wall once marked the northern edge of the Roman Empire, and was built to intimidate the uncouth tribes of hostile local natives. Now a UNESCO world heritage site, Hadrian's Wall is the largest and most important Roman site in Britain. Use this book to explore Hadrian's Wall Country, from Tynemouth to the Solway Firth. You'll discover how the Romans took a bath - and where they went to spend a penny; why aliens came to stay in a small rural town; where King Arthur lies sleeping until his country needs him; and whether Robin Hood really did take a wrong turn on his journey from Dover to Sherwood Forest. You can also find out if Hadrian was a great emperor or a ruthless tyrant; why pubs were state-owned in Carlisle; where to find the Centre of Britain; and why treasure may lie unclaimed at the bottom of a deep, dark lake. Written by someone with extensive knowledge of the region, this book will help you discover the delights of Hadrian's Wall Country, and even learn some local dialect along the way.

111 Places in Newcastle That You Shouldn't Miss (Paperback): David Taylor 111 Places in Newcastle That You Shouldn't Miss (Paperback)
David Taylor
R354 Discovery Miles 3 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Newcastle is England's most northerly city and shares a long history with Gateshead, its neighbour on the south side of the River Tyne. The two, city and town respectively, are a heady mix of the old and new; both were industrial powerhouses during the 19th Century that have successfully embraced recent change, reinventing themselves as vibrant places of entertainment and culture. With this book in hand, journey over and under the Tyne to discover treasures such as the steam turbine ship Turbinia, a sleekly streamlined example of north-eastern mechanical know-how; wander across the wide-open space of the Town Moor, where President Jimmy Carter has the right to graze cattle; take in Saltwell Towers, an eccentric castle in the leafy surroundings of Saltwell Park; then top it all off with a pint in a pub where the ghost of Charles I may well make an appearance. Written by a Geordie, this book will help you explore the quirkier side of both Newcastle and Gateshead, and discover their hidden gems.

Civil Society in South Asia (Hardcover): David Taylor, Hee-won Kim Civil Society in South Asia (Hardcover)
David Taylor, Hee-won Kim
R4,127 Discovery Miles 41 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Are new ideas needed to disentangle the uses and abuses of the idea of civil society both in South Asia and beyond? This book seeks to explore this question by reviewing the debate on civil society mainly in India but also in Pakistan. Civil society is a term that has a rich history in European political and social thought since the 17th century. Yet it has also become shorthand either for groups who place themselves in opposition to state elites or for non- governmental organizations that initiate, often in partnership with international agencies, programmes of economic and social development that to a greater or lesser extent are distanced from the state. The purpose of this collection of essays, initially presented at a seminar in 2018 in Hyderabad in South India, is to explore these disconnects and to see if concepts of civil society can be developed that go with the grain of South Asia's political and historical experience. Some of the chapters in this edited volume focus specifically on theoretical dimensions, while others take case studies from India and Pakistan. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Civil Society.

The Significance of Dreams - Bridging Clinical and Extraclinical Research in Psychoanalysis (Paperback): Peter Fonagy, Horst... The Significance of Dreams - Bridging Clinical and Extraclinical Research in Psychoanalysis (Paperback)
Peter Fonagy, Horst Kachele, Marianne Leuzinger-Bohleber, David Taylor
R1,366 Discovery Miles 13 660 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book looks at dreams from a 21st century perspective. Taking inspiration from Freud 's insights, the contributors pursue psychoanalytic interest into both neuroscience and the modern psychoanalytic consulting room. The chapters cover laboratory research on dreaming alongside the modern clinical use of dreams and link together clinical and empirical research integrating classical ideas with the plurality of psychoanalytic theoretical constructs available to modern researchers. Dreams are created and psychoanalysts writing about dreams have traditionally represented the cutting edge of clinical and theoretical development. This book is no exception to this and many of the contributions, as well as the epistemological positions taken by the writers, represent a kind of radical openness to new ways of thinking about the clinical situation and about theory, which will be necessary for psychoanalysis as a discipline in the coming years. In line with the ambition of the editors of the volume, the book represents an integration of theories and disciplines, which creates the scientific context for modern psychoanalysis. Linking clinical research to extra-clinical research via the royal road of dreaming runs through all the contributions which cover dreaming as it sheds light on clinical conditions such as depression, trauma or dreams as they form a core aspect of clinical work, be that as a co-construction or as shared play between therapist and patients. The book provides insight through dreams to understand mental function in all clinical situations and across all conditions.

Islam in South Asia (Hardcover): David Taylor Islam in South Asia (Hardcover)
David Taylor
R31,726 Discovery Miles 317 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There are more Muslims over 400 million in South Asia than in any other region in the world. Many of the most important political, intellectual and spiritual developments within Islam have had their origins, or have flourished, in the area, and Muslims from the region have played important roles in the global history of Islam. Pakistan was specifically created to provide a homeland for South Asia s Muslim population, and its trials and tribulations over the past 60 years have been carefully watched by Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Muslims constitute India s largest minority, with an often uneasy relationship to the majority.

The early history of Islam in South Asia, including migration, conversion and Muslim dynasties, as well as religious developments, are studied in depth, as is the role of Islam in the colonial period, including resistance to colonial rule, and intellectual responses to, and dialogue with, Western thought. Articles also cover Islam since independence, including political movements, Muslims as majorities and minorities, and the South Asian Muslim diaspora. In addition, Islam and development, including material related to women and Islam, legal reform, Islamic finance, and education issues, are all areas that Islam in South Asia considers.

During the last hundred years there has been extensive English-language writing and research on Islam in South Asia, both by Muslim scholars and by non-Muslims. This new Major Work from Routledge brings together the most significant and enduring work, most of it published in the past thirty years, but with occasional use of older material. Islam in South Asia, with a comprehensive introduction, newly written by the editor to place the collected material in its historical and intellectual context, is destined to be an essential work of reference.

Combatants in African Conflicts - Professionals, Praetorians, Militias, Insurgents, and Mercenaries (Hardcover): Simon David... Combatants in African Conflicts - Professionals, Praetorians, Militias, Insurgents, and Mercenaries (Hardcover)
Simon David Taylor
R4,147 Discovery Miles 41 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book focuses on the different types of combatants in conflicts in Africa, exploring the fine lines between what might be classified as a militia in one conflict, a rebel in another, or a terrorist in a third. Drawing on the work of Carl von Clausewitz, this book provides a conceptually stable and analytically sound new typology on combatants. Analysing the relationships between state and society, and drawing on Clausewitz's Trinity of passion, chance, and reason, the book presents a set of five types of armed actors: Professionals, Praetorians, Militias, Insurgents, and Mercenaries. Each type is developed through a close reading of foundational theoretical texts, reviews of contemporary studies, and a historical analysis of their unique characteristics. Unlike a reductionist binary perspective, this typology accounts for the dynamic, complex, and evolving relationships of these actors with the state and society. A typology of combatants in conflicts in Africa can provide avenues for more in-depth analysis of such conflicts and holds implications for Security Sector Reform projects and other peace-building programmes. As such, this book will be an essential reference for scholars and students of African Politics and Military and Security Studies.

Memory, Narrative and the Great War - Rifleman Patrick MacGill and the Construction of Wartime Experience (Hardcover, New):... Memory, Narrative and the Great War - Rifleman Patrick MacGill and the Construction of Wartime Experience (Hardcover, New)
David Taylor
R3,842 Discovery Miles 38 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Memory, Narrative and the Great War provides a detailed examination of the varied and complex war writings of a relatively marginal figure, Patrick MacGill, within a general framework of our current pre-occupation with blood, mud and suffering. In particular, it seeks to explain how his interpretation of war shifted from the heroic wartime autobiographical trilogy, with its emphasis on 'the romance of the rifleman' to the pessimistic and guilt-ridden interpretations in his post-war novel, Fear!, and play, Suspense. Through an exploration of the way in which war-time experiences were remembered (and re-remembered) and retold in strikingly different narratives, and using insights from cognitive psychology, it is argued that there is no contradiction between these two seemingly opposing views. Instead it is argued that, given the present orientation and problem-solving nature of both memory and narrative, the different interpretations are both 'true' in the sense that they throw light on the ongoing way in which MacGill came to terms with his experiences of war. This in turn has implications for broader interpretations of the Great War, which has increasingly be seen in terms of futile suffering, not least because of the eloquent testimony of ex-Great War soldiers, reflecting on their experiences many years after the event. Without suggesting that such testimony is invalid, it is argued that this is one view but not the only view of the war. Rather wartime memory and narrative is more akin to an ever-changing kaleidoscope, in which pieces of memory take on different (but equally valid) shapes as they are shaken with the passing of time.

"Fasten your seat belt, it's all you need to wear."

There is a new wave of thinking and action that puts people before process, choice before change, and meaning before money. We are now entering a new business, leadership and global age, with a vision, agenda and spirit born out of the realisation that there has to be a different way of success, business and leadership. One that sets us free from traditional business thinking, and takes you, your business and your life to new levels of awareness, success and achievement.

This next business age is in your hands. "The Naked Leader" is the antithesis to the process driven mentality that has wasted so many millions, destroyed the trust between company and employee, and enabled so many companies to at best stand completely still.

"The Naked Leader" is a distillation of David Taylor's ideas and inspiration - ideas which have made him Europe's most sought-after speaker on leadership and personal growth. David is known as the "Naked Leader" because of his extraordinary ability to strip away uncertainty and doubt, and conclusively show that everything we need to be successful, we already have.

"The Naked Leader" shares hundreds of life-changing actions, including: The fastest way to make any change in your life How to build deep and lasting rapport with anyone The 7 most powerful questions on earth How to change how you feel, in a single heartbeat The structure of guaranteed success How to be an awesome presenter Discovering who you really are, and why you are here "The Naked Leader" strips away the mystery, hype and jargon, to reveal the single formula for assured success that is available to everyone. The book is a journeywhich can be taken from beginning to end, or joined at any stage - taking you to wherever you want to be, drawing on the very best leadership thinking around the world, finally revealing the answer to the ultimate question, "who are you and why are you here?"

Taylor reveals the exact, specific actions to take to predict the future, and then shape it. As a practitioner, not a theorist, Taylor knows what works, and what does not. He shows us what to do, and exactly when to do it.

No matter what your vision, challenge or present position, "The Naked Leader "ensures that you succeed, making your future no longer a matter of chance, but rather a matter of choice.

It is powerful, and the results are amazing.

'The People Are Not There' - The Transformation of Badenoch 1800-1863 (Paperback, New in Paperback): David Taylor 'The People Are Not There' - The Transformation of Badenoch 1800-1863 (Paperback, New in Paperback)
David Taylor
R759 Discovery Miles 7 590 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Badenoch today is a landscape of empty glens and ruined settlements, but it was not always so. This book examines the transformative events that shaped the region's destiny: climate and market forces, hunger and relief measures, sheep farms and sporting estates, agricultural improvement and proprietorial greed, and the evolution of clanship. Although this is an intensely localised study, the dramatic nature of change is explored against the wider context of events not just across the Highlands, but also within the British state and its global empire. Badenoch's journey moves from the relative prosperity of the Napoleonic Wars into the terrible post-war destitution that devastated peasant, tacksman and Duke of Gordon alike. Estate reform and 'improvement' gradually brought a degree of economic and social stability, but inevitably resulted in depopulation as people were forced off the land to seek refuge in the impoverished 'planned villages' or to abandon their Gaelic homeland for life in the Lowlands. For those with the means, however, emigration provided lucrative opportunities unimaginable at home. Through extensive use of documentary evidence, much of it previously unseen, David Taylor paints an intimate portrait of the historically neglected region of Badenoch - one that provides a compelling new perspective on Highland history.

With over 350 heritage properties in the UK, the National Trust cares for one of the world's largest and most signifi cant holdings of art and its collection of Dutch Old Masters is particularly impressive. The catalogue will include essays by Quentin Buvelot (chief curator at the Mauritshuis) and David Taylor (curator of pictures and s culpture at the National Trust). The authors will also discuss other aspects of the infl uence of Dutch culture in British country houses (using National Trust examples) - on furniture, garden design and print and ceramics collecting.

This is a book about becoming a millionaire. Not through investment, although you may invest the money that you make. Not through savings, although you will be able to have some of those. And not through betting on the 4.10 at your local race track. This is a 'how to' book like no other, with seven possible paths, all leading to the same outcome.

This is your book, not mine. If you do the things in this book you will become a millionaire - it's that simple.

So what do you want to do? Be an authentic millionaire? Design a global brand? Start and grow your business? Avoid pitfalls? See what others don't? Become a professional speaker? Write a bestseller? Your book, your choice.

This is a work of fact - if, and only if, you do something with it. Otherwise, it's a work of fiction.
